Ruth Alder

Ruth Alder is the name one of our astrologers writes under. She prefers it that way: the readings are hers, the name is not. Every page on this site starts from a chart computed from real positions and real dates, and nothing is published without hers review.
The kitchen-table version
Families rarely need another person telling them who is difficult. They usually know. They know who shuts down. Who raises their voice. Who remembers every slight from 1998. Who needs everyone to be all right before they can relax. Who leaves the room. Who follows them into it.
I am Ruth Alder, and for eighteen years I have used astrology to look at the invisible roles people inherit inside families. Not because a chart can explain everything, but because it can sometimes show why two people can love each other deeply and still keep pressing exactly the wrong buttons.
I began formal natal-chart study in York, where my early training was deliberately traditional: planets, signs, houses, aspects, rulerships and timing. Later I spent three years in private mentorship learning to compare charts within families: parent and child, siblings, partners becoming parents, and adult children returning to relationships that have not updated since childhood. That work grew into more than 3,110 family charts and relationship comparisons.
My gift developed quietly. I became good at spotting the role a person is playing before we start deciding whether the role is fair. The peacemaker. The responsible one. The invisible one. The rebel. The child who becomes the adult too early. The parent who cannot stop managing everybody because managing was once how love was demonstrated.
I do not use astrology to label a child or blame a parent. I do not believe a difficult aspect means a difficult family, and I certainly do not believe anyone is doomed to become the worst expression of a placement. What I believe is that families improve when curiosity arrives before accusation.
A chart can sometimes create that tiny pause. Instead of why are you like this, we get to ask what does safety look like to you. Instead of why will you not listen, we ask what happens inside you when you feel controlled.
That is why I think this work can help. Not because the stars can fix a family. Because a family changes when even one person becomes willing to see the pattern instead of only the argument. The chart is not the verdict. It is another way into the conversation.
